Helping animal rescues get found online: UK Reptiles & Recovery

Running an animal rescue means caring for animals, answering enquiries, finding suitable homes and raising funds. For smaller, volunteer-led organisations, building a website can easily fall down the list.

That was the situation for Danny, who runs UK Reptiles & Recovery in Northamptonshire. He had social media accounts, but not the time or money to create his own website.

Within a day of joining SortedPets, Danny received his first rescue request through the site. Since then, he has reported a couple of rescues coming through the directory.

About UK Reptiles & Recovery

UK Reptiles and Recovery LogoUK Reptiles & Recovery is a volunteer-led non-profit supporting reptiles and other exotic animals.

Working alongside the Central Reptile Rehome Network, Danny helps rehabilitate and rehome snakes, lizards, geckos, tortoises and other exotic species across Northamptonshire and surrounding counties.

Animals arrive because of changing circumstances, difficulties providing appropriate care, neglect or unsuitable conditions. The rescue provides care before carefully matching animals with suitable adopters.

Danny also offers advice on feeding, husbandry and enclosure setup, alongside a judgement-free surrender service for owners who can no longer care for their pets.

Reaching people beyond social media

The first people who enquired through Danny’s SortedPets listing didn’t use social media. His social accounts therefore weren’t reaching some of the people who needed his help.

Others might use social media but have no idea that the rescue exists or what it is called.

Instead, they may search for a reptile rescue nearby, somewhere to surrender a snake, or advice about adopting a tortoise.

A searchable listing gives these people another route to Danny, without him needing to build and maintain a separate website.

People are searching for reptile support

Google’s keyword research data shows demand for different kinds of support. “Reptile rescue near me” has an estimated 1,000 searches a month. Species-specific searches include “tortoise rescue near me” at 590, “snake rescue near me” at 140 and “bearded dragon rescue near me” at 70.

The wider keyword list includes an estimated 1,130 monthly searches across terms suggesting adoption, alongside 140 across terms suggesting surrender. Examples include “tortoise adoption near me”, “snakes for adoption near me” and “reptile surrender near me”.

These are keyword estimates, not individual people, and similar terms may overlap. Broader searches such as “reptile rescue near me” don’t reveal whether someone wants to adopt or surrender.

However, the data shows demand for both sides of a rescue’s work: helping owners who can no longer care for their pets and connecting animals with potential adopters.

Making the listing relevant

We worked on Danny’s profile to explain what the rescue does, which animals it supports and where it operates.

The Northamptonshire location and surrounding coverage were important. Someone looking for practical help needs to establish whether a rescue is within travelling distance.

We included information about rehabilitation, surrender, responsible rehoming and care advice, helping visitors understand whether Danny could support their situation.

The name UK Reptiles & Recovery also clearly describes its focus, making the listing’s purpose straightforward to understand.

Search visibility takes time

A new page won’t necessarily appear prominently in Google straight away. Search engines consider how relevant and useful its information is to the terms someone searches for.

Pages need to be discovered and indexed, and building visibility can take weeks or months. There is no fixed timetable or guaranteed ranking.

Danny’s Search Console data shows the listing being found through Google, with visibility becoming more consistent towards the end of the period shown.

The data doesn’t identify which visits led to enquiries. Danny’s feedback does confirm that people have found and contacted the rescue through SortedPets.

Helping more animal charities get found

Smaller rescues can be difficult to find online. Volunteers may have the knowledge and experience to help, but limited time and resources for websites and marketing.

Danny’s experience demonstrates how a useful local listing can help bridge that gap. It is a practical result that reflects why we started SortedPets.

Animal charities can list for free. We would welcome more reptile rescues and organisations supporting any other animals, particularly those without their own website.

Our aim is to make local animal support easier to find.
